PRINCE: A London Private Viewing with Afshin Shahidi

Date: 1st of March 2019
Time: 6pm

Friday 1st March at 6pm at Herrick Gallery
Anjoman MEMBERS ONLY event

This was an exclusive chance to hear remarkable stories from Prince’s longest serving personal photographer. Released in late 2017, Afshin’s book showcases rare and intimate stills both on and off stage. And for the first time, Afshin was offering limited edition fine art photography from his book to the public, as well as a few never seen before images.

Iranian-born Shahidi met the musician in their shared hometown of Minneapolis back in 1993 at Prince’s renowned recording studio, lyrically portrayed by the artist as “there aren’t any rules in Paisley Park”. Initially working as a cinematographer, Shahidi’s passion for creating still images was obvious to Prince who soon after invited him to photograph his then band, the New Power Generation.

After a trial period, and satisfied with the essence, Prince asked Shahidi to become his official still photographer. In this position, Shahidi captured Prince on stage and at play, in highly styled settings and in candid situations. He travelled with Prince from Panama, to Morocco, to London and beyond. The relationship between the two transitioned from professional peers, to duelling conversationalists, to trusted companions. Ultimately, Shahidi’s unique access to the notoriously inaccessible Prince gave him the opportunity to create indelible images of the icon.

The JCPOA Post-US Withdrawal: The Future of The Iran Deal and Consequences for UK and European Businesses

12th June 2018 at Jumeirah Carlton Tower

The implications of the US withdrawal on May 8th, 2018 for the UK and Europe were discussed by the evening’s distinguished speakers: His Excellency Nicholas Hopton, outgoing UK Ambassador to Iran, Ms. Ellie Geranmayeh, Senior Policy Fellow for the Middle East and North Africa Programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations and Mr. Cyrus Ardalan, Chairman of Citigroup Global Markets, OakNorth Bank, IFFI, and former Vice-Chairman of Barclays Bank. Anjoman’s very own Abbas Beyad chaired the evening’s discussion.

The discussion included the UK’s commitment to support domestic efforts to engage in business with Iran. Furthermore, the efforts the UK’s European allies are taking in order to ensure that a reasonable economic package be provided for Iran were discussed in detail. While there is great interest on the part of Europe to push for banking mechanisms to uphold the deal, the speakers acknowledged difficulty in counteracting the extent of secondary sanctions.
